About us

“Abu Nawas” is a group working for LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) rights in Algeria.
A group that fights for the most basic right: to live in dignity and irrespective of their sexual orientations and gender identities.

It should be noted that the “Abu Nawas”met all the requirements association by law n ° 90-31 of 04-12-2025 concerning associations. However, our group operates in secret and without recognition since the Algerian penal code still sees homosexuality as a crime punishable by imprisonment and a fine.

Why the name?

Abu Nawas was one of the greatest poets of his time. The fact that he wasgay and the lover of
Caliph Harun al-Rashid’s son did not detract from his genius or his knowledge.

Furthermore, we want to remain a part of the Arab Muslim society with a dissociation of the Western models. Far from the logic of mimicry as we are often accused our opponents.
